Buffo the Toolman Origin Story

Welcome to my Blog

Today marks the inaugural post of my blog, Buffo the Toolman, a real-time chronicle of how this financial analyst, who cannot draw a straight line, let alone read his own handwriting, found himself bumbling through, insatiably, numerous DIY escapades.

Introducing Buffo the Toolman

That’s me, Basili Alukos, pictured below as first-time tool owner. The word “Buffo” is an homage to my Baba (Greek for Dad), who passed away eight years ago. My family would holler “Buffo” to each other, leaving bewildered Greeks laughing at a family with adults yelling “fool” to each other as a sign of endearment.

I’m sure you’re calling rubbish on the first-time tool owner claim, as this is a current photo of a full-grown man. Well, technically yes, I’ve lived in a house with screw drivers, but I’ve never researched, let alone purchased, tools myself. Perhaps it was moving into our new home, but I was stoked when the headlamp arrived. I probably should not have settled for the “chiguni” (Greek for “cheap”) lamp, as it’s quickly become more of a bulky head accessory than a useful light.

How Buffo the Toolman Was Created

No, I wasn’t born with a toolset, but I’m scrappy (read: chiguini) so when the Honda dealership sent my wife and me a $1,600 estimate for a routine oil change, minor fixes and complimentary (my foot!) inspection for our 2009 Civic, it was time to get to work. A car-enthusiast co-worker counseled me on the next steps. Thankfully, the engine didn’t explode on our subsequent car ride, and the engine and cabin filters received green lights at our next service appointment.

My cash register eyes lit up at that time, and years later when we moved into our new house on Oct. 25. 2023, Buffo the Toolman was born.

Path Forward

I want you, dear reader, to feel inspired by my experiences and hopefully prod you into action. I will share my DIY experiences, both past projects and future journeys, as well as recognize the people, forums, and stores that have made my experiences so successful.

Be on the lookout for the next installment of Buffo the Toolman. Until then, may you have unstripped fasteners, uniform painting lines, and straight crosscuts.
